Kip britanskog trgovca robljem iz 17. stoljeća srušen je u nedjelju tijekom antirasističkog prosvjeda u Bristolu na jugozapadu Engleske, nakon poziva na uklanjanje ostataka povijesnih podsjećanja na trgovinu robljem.

Taj potez pokrenuo je raspravu među Britancima o tome je li rušenje kipa Edwarda Colstona vandalizam ili povijesni trenutak koji je skrenuo pozornost na ulogu Britanije u trgovini robovima.

Oporbeni laburist Andrew Adonis rekao je da je Britanija bila "previše spora" u uklanjanju spomena na trgovce robljem i "carske kriminalce", dok je bivši ministar financija Sajid Javid iz vladajuće Konzervativne stranke rekao da je rušenje krivično djelo.

"Odrastao sam u Bristolu. Mrzim kako je Edward Colston profitirao od trgovine robovima. Ali, to nije u redu", izjavio je Javid.

"Ako Bristolci žele ukloniti spomenik, to bi trebalo učiniti demokratski a ne počinjenjem kaznenog djela".

Snimke objavljene na društvenim mrežama pokazuju kako su demonstranti "Black Lives Matter" navijali dok su rušili kip te ga bacili u rijeku tijekom uglavnom mirnih prosvjeda ovoga vikenda u Londonu, Manchesteru, Glasgowu i Edinburghu.

Colston, rođen 1636. u Bristolu, bio je trgovac i zastupnik u parlamentu a bogatstvo je stekao uglavnom prevezavši oko 80.000 muškaraca, žena i djece iz Afrike na Karibe i Ameriku, pri čemu su mnogi umrli na tom putu.

Brončani kip, podignut 1895. godine, u prošlosti je bio žarište prosvjeda, a peticijom kojom se traži njezino uklanjanje nedavno je prikupljeno više od 11.000 potpisa.
